As of right now, we don’t have any information other than you wanted to know if Peer-to-Peer was still in the product. That question has been answered. The fact that no one has ever gotten mad about more seats in a car is exactly my point. This is a very fixed cost evaluation.

I completely understand most people get stuck on having to buy more licenses than they are going to use. We are back to value.

It’s about value to the person. They have 2 users. I’m not trying to say it is or isn’t for them, just that this is the evaluation on the table. I can’t measure it for them, since I don’t have any data or info from their end.

This is the evaluation if you really want to break it down by user count:. If that cost doesn’t work with this non-profit, then the move is to try and see if Claris an offer a different price, or find an alternative, or stay on the version currently being used.

I’m currently using I think I started doing selective upgrades after v5? I spoke to Sales at the time of my last upgrade, when the future deprecation was flagged. I was told that they didn’t see how this new direction would leave any users behind. We are in a similar situation. Have a simple database, two-person firm with current macs, used FileMaker for over 15 years with this database. Peer performance to open host files from client is much worse than FM Tech support no help, and no refund since we reported problem at 16 days after purchase refund deadline is 14 days.

Giving the benefit of the doubt to FMP – have you made any structural changes that might account for the difference? I’ve decided not to purchase v19 for the moment. Not enought benefit for me and too much potential downside. Especially if peer to peer functions poorly. I’m also wondering how a feature “intended for testing” benefits anyone most of all a user’s impression of the product by not working well. I am sorry to see the poor performance on P-t-P but it should never be used anyway it’s just an accident waiting to happen.

Just get a nice Mac Mini as a server and a 5 user license and you’ll be much better off. Regarding the need for a server to run FMS, keep in mind that moving away from FileMaker to any other solution will also need a server.

I really sympathise with clients using FileMaker for simple solutions. FileMaker may be very capable, but if you are not using all its facilities, the price has risen unreasonably and you may not need it to do anything more.

Deprecating features such as peer-to-peer is deliberately forcing users to move to a different option and cutting off that part of the market. But surely the crucial point is that for any business using FileMaker for just a few users, should the business expand, they will ultimately need more staff and hence more licenses. Claris are killing the fledgling end of their relationship with small businesses with their new pricing and licensing policies.

It used to be an easy sell, to offer a simple solution on a couple of licences to a new business to help them get on their feet. As the business succeeds and expands they then bought more licences and FileMaker Server etc.

The early price point is now too great a barrier to many and for new businesses requiring simple solutions there is too much competition from cheap or even free online CRM and accounts solutions. I don’t see the prices as unreasonable except for cloud FM is still very cheap but you need a 5 user minimum and can’t buy server as a separate product any longer.

If you don’t need everything that FM is capable of or don’t need solution for at least 5 people I don’t see that as a big issue really it just means you need a different product then what FM offers. The people who’ve been using the FileMaker solution for 15 years might see it as a big issue.

It’s a matter of perspective. No one is forcing people to continue to use FM if they truly can’t afford it. Databases tend to be written using the features available at the time. Unless you are continually adding functionality to an existing solution, upgrading to the latest version every time is not always worth it, especially when you then find that new ‘bugs’ cause something which previously worked now doesn’t!

Then use “hosts” to find and open the file on the iOS device. I can see and test the UI on the iOS device, but can immediately use my development machine to modify the layout as needed to fine tune things. I see some confusion here over the term “peer to peer”. Peer to peer in my understanding is hosting the file from one copy of FileMaker and accessing it as a client using FileMaker on another computer.

This is reasonably safe and does not risk damaging your file unless you get a crash–a risk shared by opening the file directly from the same machine as where the file is located. The MOST dangerous way to do this is to set up a shared volume where you access the file over the network to open it without it being hosted by FileMaker Pro or Server. This has both slower performance and adds a real risk of getting a damaged file. I’m told that this can be true of set ups like Drop Box as well, though I’ve never gotten a damaged file that way, I have gotten multiple copies of the same file, each of which had different data and had a real problem sorting out the data to get a “true copy”.

You should consider using a FileMaker hosting service, such as ours, as an affordable way to get your databases on the internet hosted by FileMaker Server. Please contact me at jmay at pointinspace. It was a real Doh problem. I had named the file with a. Changed it to. I am using FileMaker on my laptop for development and sharing the file with my iPhone so I can test the layouts. There can be issues so it probably isn’t a good idea for a production environment.

However, a headless computer no human using it can be used with Pro to act as a cheap server but it is limited to less than 9 clients. Since you speak of 2 this would be doable. Thus two people could share the one file via ethernet or wifi and even over the Internet if you know how to share the file over the Internet. Note: that regardles of how you share the file, it is not a good idea to have someone with full access making changes while others are sharing the database.

An older computer would be satisfactory for hosting the file for two people using Wifi within reason. This might be a good reason to update your two year old laptop and use it as a host I make those kinds of changes nearly every day. There are, however, a few kinds of changes that I don’t do on a live system due to the potential troubles it can cause. I have often enjoyed myself when someone put up a contrary viewpoint and then agreed with me Especially fun in ‘arguments’ that go on for a long period of time and I end it with “Well, I see you are using my original argument against me.

The most fun change is to change a stored calculated field in a critical table when the billing department is doing the monthly statements. I only did this once and never again after I discovered that half the records retained the old computation and the other half the new one. That was a script step.

That simply indicates that you didn’t pay attention to the consequences of the change that you were making. It doesn’t argue that NO changes should be made to a live system only that some are unwise.

Any change even to a file file where you are the only user must be made with all due caution. I didn’t say that all types of design changes were OK to make.

Modifying a field definition is right of the top of the list of the changes I only make when I’ve taken the field off-line, but there are many other changes that are OK if done with appropriate caution. One of the worst, from a developer’s safety standpoint, is to delete, move, change a button on a layout.

This subtle change can lead to emotional confusion on the user’s part Do it all the time and don’t have issues with the users. But I don’t make interface changes any more carelessly than I do other changes. I make interface changes incremental if possible and even small changes are done with the support of both documentation and direct communication with the user.

That can even be a message set to pop up when a layout is changed that tells the user what changed with a built in expiry feature that stops popping it up or making it visible on the layout. I just totally changed the UI for a small but important part of our system. So far, not one complaint and many thank yous, but:. And keep in mind that such changes can be just as much an issue for a user if you take the file down off the server, make the changes and put it back up, but now you have to kick everyone out of the system to do the update as well as hit them with the interface change.

Note that there’s human engineering taking place along with the software engineering. You should be pointed to this page follow all links below the main article :. Lots of good information in this thread, I just want to offer some perspective on this statement.

FMS is not just for access across the internet or access from anywhere. Even in very small deployments with 2 users on an internal network, FMS can be of real value. It really comes down to how valuable the solution and its data is, not the size of the deployment or how it is being accessed. The live backups alone can be crucial. Guy, thanks. It’s safe and easy with FileMaker Pro. If your computers are connected to a network, you and other Windows and Mac users can access the same database file simultaneously. And with the powerful security model in FileMaker Pro, you can determine what users can do and see.

Databases can contain information from the most simplistic to the highly confidential. Before you share your data, you should determine what level of security is needed for the database.
